How do you tell if you have a water leak?

In most cases you have received a notice from your water company telling you that you have excessive water usage or you may have a wet area in your lawn. The first step is to determine if you have a leak. The easiest way to tell if you have a leak is to locate your meter and remove the lid. The meter has a leak detector that is shaped like a triangle or may look like a star. Make sure that no water is being used in the house if the leak detector is moving that means that you may have a leak somewhere on your system.

The next step would be to determine if the leak is inside of the house, or on the outside water main.  You should have a valve that can be turned off where the water main comes into the home, most are located in the garage near your hose bib.

If you can locate the valve, you can turn off the water by turning the valve to the right until it stops moving. This will allow you to check the meter again to see if the leak detector is still moving. If it has stopped the leak is in the house, if it is still moving the leak is outside of the house before the valve that you shut off.

The blue disc on the left is the leak detector. The red triangle on the bottom meter is the leak detector.

Locating the leak
You can look for leads inside your home for obvious drips such as toilets, faucets or tub valves they should not be leaking out into the fixture, small drips can add up over time.

If the leak is on the outside of the house the plumber will use a sonic leak detector on hard surfaces like concrete and asphalt we listen for the leak. For leaks in the ground below grass or dirt we would use either the sonic leak detector or helium leak detection. We do this by forcing helium into the water line, "don't worry this is safe" we then detect the concentration of helium as it escapes out of the broken section of the pipe. We also have pipe locater equipment to locate your water line so we know where to look for your leak.

We have everything on our trucks to locate your leak, and make the repair.
